Wednesday W.O.W - Digital Gamified Learning
[4min read] Your mid-week bite sized treat on emerging tech and our journey to the Metaverse. How learning & teaching is being transformed in the digital age, and how you can use it to your advantage.
A nibble of knowledge in your inbox every Wednesday with a simple format:
What the technology is
Objective(s) - what is it trying to achieve, with some examples
Why it is important to users as well as businesses & brands.
What is Digital Gamified Learning?
Gamified learning is the use of game elements in teaching contexts to make learning more engaging and effective. It can include elements such as point systems, leaderboards, badges, and challenges to motivate learners and encourage active participation.
Digitisation takes gamified learning to a new level by enabling hyper-customised learning experiences, that are convenient and engaging for users, with the possibility of digital rewards. In the emerging Metaverse these can be more immersive and complex.
What are the objectives of the technology?
To make learning fun and effective by the use of natural principles of human psychology that are deeply ingrained in our nature, such as motivation, reward-seeking, and socialization. By understanding these principles and using them effectively, gamification can create powerful and engaging learning experiences.
Make a daunting or complex task more fun. For example, Duolingo is a popular language-learning app that uses gamification to make learning a new language more fun and engaging. Habitica is a productivity app that turns daily tasks into a game, users earn points and rewards for completing tasks, such as studying for exams or exercising.
Facilitate “learn-to-earn” whereby instead of advertising, organisations can pay users micropayments to learn about their product or idea. Traditionally companies pay advertisers to shout via ads for your attention, for $2 per click as an example. In the Metaverse economy, this model is flipped and the “teacher” and “learner” can connect directly. Micropayments via blockchain can allow small amounts of currency to be quickly transferred in any direction. Coinbase Learning Rewards already allows users to learn about a token, pass a quiz, and earn $2 in that token instantly.
Make corporate learning management systems better! Through my work with Serious Business Games (based in Germany), we create engaging customised learning pathways that teach core skills like Coaching, Goal setting, Effective meetings, and Resilience all the way through to Agile Methodologies and IT Security. Users can access them on anything with a browser, from work or home. Used by 100+ large companies (Citibank, Coca Cola, Axa, KMNG, etc) with “off the shelf” options as well as full customisation. Below is an example of a success story:
Why is it important to our future?
Digital gamified learning is important for both learners and businesses/brands. For learners, gamification makes learning more convenient, enjoyable and engaging, which can improve knowledge retention and motivation. For businesses/brands, gamified learning can help increase user engagement and loyalty, while also providing valuable data and insights into user behaviour.
In addition, gamification can be used to promote positive behaviours, such as healthy habits or environmental awareness. By turning learning into a game, gamified learning can help promote social change and make learning more accessible and inclusive.
Overall, gamified learning is a powerful tool for revolutionizing education and improving the way we learn. The emerging Metaverse will make these more immersive and revolutionise the relationships between “learner” and “teacher” and the reward pathways used.
If you have an organisation in mind that might like to learn more, please pass on this invitation to an info session I am running in just over 2 weeks:

Otherwise, anyone can reach out to me directly, creating customised digital gamified learning pathways for employees is one of the (many) consulting services I offer. Reach out to me at https://johnsonandhunt.com/reach-out
